There is hardly any home that doesn’t have multiple electronic devices. Most of these devices come with remotes, whether it is a TV, AC, set-top box, music system, fans, lights or more. It will mean you have to know the working of and handle ten remotes if there are ten appliances at home.
Now, that’s a hassle. If there are senior citizens at home, they would prefer not to use any gadgets than having to operate multiple remote controllers and get confused.
But is there a solution? Yes, there is.
If the advancement of technology creates a problem, it also offers solutions. This time as well it has come up with the perfect alternative to escape the whirlpool of umpteen remotes – the Universal Remote Controller! Yes, a single remote which comes with the power to control almost all your appliances!
What is a universal remote controller?
As said earlier, a universal remote controller helps you control multiple electronic devices from a single point or even from your smartphone with ease. You will have a single remote to switch on or off TV, music system, set-top box, AC, and more. Keep aside all your other remotes and start using a universal remote control. Fewer remotes on your coffee table will mean more convenience to you and will turn your home into a smart home. There are also no more worries about repairing or replacing the many worn-out remotes.
Types of universal remote controllers
There are two categories of universal remote controllers – multi-brand and learning.
Multibrand universal remote controls
Pre-programmed remotes or multi-brand remotes use codes to operate devices. They can handle four devices at a time but they can only operate the basic main functions like volume control, turning the channels, etc.
Learning universal remote controls
The major advantage of Learning Remotes is that they have the ability to ‘learn’ and thus can mimic the functions of the original remote. All you have to do is hold the remotes head-to-head together and the infrared signals pass on to the universal remote allowing it to copy all the functions of the earlier remote. Straight out of a science fiction movie, isn’t it? Since learning remotes have the capacity to control and help operate a larger number of electronic devices, it is the universal remote controller in the true sense.
How do universal remote controls work?
Here are a few technologies that make universal remote controllers, well, universal;
Infrared Ray (IR) Blaster Remotes
It is the most commonly used technology in the universal remote controls of today. The remote sends infrared light signals to the device it controls. The working of IR remotes is similar to the functioning of a flashlight. That is also the reason you have to point the remote to the device you intend to control with it, and only then it will work. The path to the device has to be clear or should be at the direct line-of-sight.
There is a standard light sensor on the top of the remote, but not visible to the naked eye. Since your eyes cannot detect the frequency of infrared rays, you are unable to see the signals. It sends binary code light sensors along with numerous light flashes at 38kHz to the device. It receives multiple commands from the remote in the form of codes. First is the start code, then function command, following is the address command and finally stop code.
Radio Frequency (RF) Remotes
Remotes that work using RF can work through obstructions between the remote and the device. They may also come with an infrared option. The radio frequency remote control also works similar to the IF remote control through standard binary codes. You will need an antenna with the RF remote, as will send the codes to the antenna for it to interpret it and send the data as infrared signals to the device.
Bluetooth-controlled Remotes: Just as Bluetooth connects devices, the universal remote controller connects to the device wirelessly using Bluetooth.
It is one of the most convenient forms of universal remotes, as it connects to the devices using a WiFi signal. The universal remote from Oakter is a WiFi universal remote.
